Refractory Bricks

Different types and functions of refractory mortar

Mar 21,2025

There are many types of refractory mortar, and different materials have different functions.

Clay refractory mortar is combined with soft clay or chemical binder. It is mainly used for joints and repairs of clay bricks. Clay refractory mortar can be combined with water or phosphoric acid.

High-alumina refractory mortar is made of high-alumina clinker powder, soft clay powder or chemical binder. It is used for joints of high-alumina brick masonry. High-alumina refractory mortar is also divided into mortars with different aluminum contents and different grades, which are used according to the different aluminum contents of high-alumina bricks.

Corundum refractory mortar is made of corundum powder and soft clay or chemical binder as binder. It is mainly used as refractory mortar for connecting corundum brick joints. The aluminum content of this mortar is more than 80%.

Silicon carbide refractory mortar is mainly made of silicon carbide powder. It is used to combine SiC bricks, corundum SiC bricks and other masonry mortars. It can also be used as grouting material and spray coating. Carbon mortar is used for the masonry of furnace bottom carbon bricks and annular carbon bricks. It can also be used for coating and filling between ceramic cups and annular carbon bricks.

Carbon mortar has the characteristics of high strength after curing at room temperature. Carbon refractory mortar is made of anthracite, graphite, silicon carbide fine powder as raw materials, resin and additives as binder materials, and a variety of additives.

Carbon glue and fine seam paste are both carbon refractory mortars, which are used for thin seam masonry, such as microporous carbon silicon carbide roasted carbon blocks, microporous molded small carbon blocks, semi-graphite roasted carbon blocks, and microporous carbon blocks.

Waterless press-in mortar is a paste or slurry material constructed by extrusion. It is composed of refractory powder, binder and admixture. Water resin is added when used. It is used for press-in repair of blast furnace body. Generally, it is constructed in the form of two press-ins.

Insulating refractory mortar is prepared with lightweight refractory powder and binder. It has a small volume density and low thermal conductivity, and is used for the joint connection of lightweight refractory bricks. Insulating mortar is divided into high-aluminum and clay. Clay lightweight insulating mortar can also be used directly.

Refractory buffer mortar is a special refractory mortar made of refractory raw materials to buffer the thermal expansion stress of refractory masonry. It is used in blast furnaces, hot blast furnaces, etc. that need to buffer thermal expansion stress. There are high-aluminum refractory buffer mortar, siliceous refractory buffer mortar, non-aqueous silicon carbide refractory buffer mortar, etc.

Refractory mortar is made of different types of mortar according to the different needs of different materials. Different materials have different functions, different binders, and different effects of use.
