1. Heat Resistance
Corundum brick: The fire resistance and operating temperature are relatively low, with the general operating temperature being around 1600°C.
Chrome corundum brick: High fire resistance, exceeding 1790°C, and a softening temperature under load exceeding 1700°C, far exceeding the high-temperature characteristics of pure corundum bricks.
2. Compressive Strength
Corundum brick: The compressive strength is 70 to 100 MPa.
Chrome corundum brick: The compressive strength at room temperature exceeds 150 MPa, which is far superior to that of corundum bricks. During firing, the Al₂O₃-Cr₂O₃ solid solution formed between the particles firmly binds the particles and the fine powder, significantly increasing the strength of the refractory brick.
3. Heat resistance
Chrome corundum brick: As the Cr₂O₃ content increases, the heat resistance decreases. Chrome corundum bricks with a low Cr₂O₃ content exhibit excellent heat resistance. Generally, the Cr₂O₃ content of chrome corundum bricks is between 12% and 20%. In particular, AKZ brand chrome corundum bricks, containing a small amount of additives that modify the phase characteristics, exhibit excellent heat resistance.
4. Slag Erosion Resistance
Corundum Brick: Slag erosion resistance is low; slag penetrates into the brick and through the pores to the surface, causing surface browning.
Chrome Corundum Brick: Slag erosion resistance is very high, with virtually no slag corrosion. The edges of the internal pores and slag residue are clearly visible, and slag penetration into the brick is extremely low. The chemical fusibility and permeability of gasification slag are higher than those of corundum refractory bricks.
5. Applications
Chrome Corundum Brick: Mainly used for lining glass furnaces, iron pretreatment equipment, waste incinerators, gasifiers, and other applications requiring high heat and corrosion resistance.
Corundum bricks: Widely used in cracking furnaces and converters in the petrochemical and mineral processing industries, steelmaking furnaces, blast furnaces, and other high-temperature furnace linings in the metallurgical industry.
6. Cost and Selection
Cost: The price of corundum refractory bricks is relatively low. Selection recommendations: If high-temperature requirements are not very high and cost is a priority, it is advisable to opt for corundum refractory bricks. If high heat and corrosion resistance are required, chrome corundum bricks are a more suitable option.
